In short, coaxial cable is a transmission line carrying electric signals with low loss.
In 1880, an English engineer Oliver Heaviside invented coaxial cable. Then he had patented his invention in the same year.
With no doubt, coaxial cable has a wide range of application. For example, RG6 cables can connect your domestic televisions. RG59 cable can support the installation of the CCTV system. Besides, in many companies and date centers, RG11 cable is used for Ethernet connection.
Coaxial cables are not all the same because they have different types. RG6, RG59, and RG11 are the three most common types.
RG6 cable is used to carry signals for TV connection. The RG59 cable finds its application in CCTV system. And the RG11 cable is a better version of RG6. Some special conditions like burial or long distances will use RG11.
The connectors for the cables also have different types. The more common one is the BNC connector.

Generally, it consists of four parts - Central Conductor, Dielectric, Shielding, and Jacket.
You can check out the diagram below:
The central conductor of the cable is BC. BC stands for Bare Copper Wire. And it also can be CCS. CCS stands for Copper-clad Steel . BC has a great electric conductivity. It ranks second only to silver. But its price is higher. CCS is relatively cheaper. With the skin effect in high frequency, CCS is used to transmit signals in a coaxial cable. (Such as the connection between TV and VCD, outdoor antenna and CCTV, etc.) So compared to the hard wire, copper wire has greater strength of the expansion. It also can be used as the aerial cable over long stances in the high mountains or across the rivers.
First, dielectric layer has mixed materials. They includes the low-density PE, high-density PE, and little nucleator. Then the injecting nitrogen helps to form the foaming. And the purity of nitrogen is up to 99.99%.
The structure of the dielectric is “Cover+Foaming + Cover”. So compared to the structure without outer cover, it has some advantages. On the one hand, it has greater foaming. On the other hand, the surface of the core wire is smooth and mechanical strength is better.
There are three types of shielding. The first one is the standard shielding. The structure is single-sided APC(Aluminum -plastic Composite)tape plus braiding.
Then the second one is the triple-layer shielding. The structure is single-sided APC tape plus braiding plus double-sided APC tape.
Lastly the third one is the four-layer shielding. The structure is single-sided APC tape plus braiding plus double-sided APC tape plus braiding.
The shield can help to reduce signal interference. It can prevent the outside condition from affecting the transmission. Likewise, it can prevent the transmission from affecting the outside condition.
The shielding also serves as an outer conductor. The greater thickness and higher density of shielding is, the higher strength of protection will be.
The materials of the shielding are various. They include aluminum-polymer taped wrapping, copper braiding, copper taped wrapping, etc. So far coaxial cables have adopted the braiding of Al-Mg Alloy Wire. So they can increase the strength and reduce cost. The copper wire and copper-clad aluminum wire are a bit expensive. Thus, its usage number isn’t large.
The material of the jacket is PVC or PE. The jacket can protect the inner construction of cables from damage. Besides, it can increase the mechanical strength of cables.
PVC is commonly used for indoor cables. It can prevent cables from burning . PE is normally used for outdoor cables. It can protect the cables from ultraviolet. Besides, it causes less pollution to the environment.
Some indoor cables would adopt PE to avoid burning. Because there are more stricter demands on the environment toady. The usage number of PE isn't large due to its high price.
A coaxial cable conducts electrical signals by the central conductor. And then the dielectric providing insulation is to prevent signal loss and reduce interference.
Let’s talk about the characteristics of coaxial cable in this section.
First of all, the cable has multiple applications. It is commonly used to transmit audio and video signals. You can use it for TV connection and computer network.
Second, the cable has a stable transmission speed. Besides, it is good at reducing signal losses and interference due to its insulation.
Third, it is very durable and flexible. You can use it for a very long time. Also, it is easy to bend and run. So you can install it easily by yourself.
At last, it is the matter of price. Compared to optical fiber and twisted-pair cable, coaxial cable is cheaper. But it has disadvantages, too. It will cost more to install for longer distances. With greater thickness, coaxial cable is more difficult to bend and run. What's more, the fast network standard doesn’t support coaxial cable very much. People would tend to use fiber or twisted-pair cables for the computer network.
Therefore,we can benefit a lot from knowing better a coaxial cable, which helps us more easily to install and fix the cables.
